Living with Alpha-1

Hyperinflation of the lungs (pulmonary emphysema) due to alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency develops gradually. “Suddenly” you find activities strain that used to be easy. Flights of steps seem longer, shopping bags heavier. You may notice a preference recently for taking the elevator instead of the stairs or no longer visit certain friends because they live on the fourth floor of a building with no elevator. Breathing becomes increasingly difficult or a slow torture because you can’t seem to get enough air. This gradual change appears mystifying, because you are otherwise doing everything just as you have always done. Of course you hear about people with lung problems, but they’re much older than you.
